Top Gear Live
Sep 1, 2009
THE “One Stop” capabilities of Benefitz were on display big-time when the live version of the popular BBC Top Gear television programme was staged in Auckland.
Top Gear Live is a joint venture between BBC Worldwide and Brand Events UK. The live motoring performance incorporates the drama of film and theatre with the thrills and spills of stunts and special effects. Presenters Jeremy Clarkson and Richard Hammond team up with a local presenter in each tour destination.
Top Gear Live was promoted locally by DMG World Media (NZ). In New Zealand, DMG stages 13 consumer and trade shows each year, with a total of 4000 exhibitors and 300,000 visitors. The biggest of these is the Auckland Home Show.
Over four days at the ASB Showgrounds, Top Gear stars Jeremy Clarkson, Richard Hammond – assisted by New Zealand’s own Greg Murphy – turned on 10 action-packed 75 minute live shows, a version of the internationally acclaimed and multi award-winning BBC TV series.
Benefitz were engaged to produce a wide variety of items for Top Gear Live. These items included 3000 plus unique – numbered and diecut – seat adhesives (printed on Benefitz iGEN digital press using XMPie software), 10 metres wide entry adhesive signage (printed on Benefitz JV5 Mimaki large format printing machine), corflute directional signage (printed on Benefitz HP FB6100 Flatbed), and massive pvc banners (printed on Benefitz HP XP5300 5 metres wide grand format printing machine). Added to these items were the signage and vehicle graphics required for the fleet of vehicles used in the show. As well as the printing of these items Benefitz also did the graphic design based on the style specified.
“It is great when we can work on a project which shows the depth of our capability,” says Benefitz Managing Director Aidan Bennett. “What was special about Top Gear Live was that we not only did the graphic design and printing for all these items, but we also did all the signage required for the cars as well. This included vehicle wraps which were done within very tight timeframes. We turned a red supercar into a V (drink) sponsored green supercar and a Subaru WRX into a police car.”

And another thing… The timing and delivery of all the items produced for Top Gear Live was crucial. As this was the first show of this type in New Zealand there was a requirement for Benefitz to be ‘on-call’ to produce and deliver additional signage items required by the promoters. Due to the printing capability of Benefitz this wasn’t a problem. Additional signage was printed and delivered within hours of being ordered.
